Internships in Environmental Science


The following is a sample of ongoing internships available year round, and may be paid or unpaid.  You can do more than 1 internship during your time at LC (or an internship on top of a research project or study abroad class) with the extra internship hours counting as electives for the major (up to 6 credit hours total).  12 hours of internship credit may be applied to your degree.  You must be a junior or a senior with at least a 2.5 GPA.  Please contact your advisor with questions or for additional internship possibilities.

Naturalist, Nature Zone, City of Lynchburg Parks & Recreation
Performs responsible work assisting Naturalist staff in programming, marketing and maintenance that supports the program’s overall goals, objectives, image and identity, by performing the duties as described here.

GIS Technician, Bedford County
The Bedford County GIS Department is seeking a student with GIS experience for an ongoing internship position. The intern is to assist in the updating and editing of the County’s cadastral and 911 geographic databases. This work includes: correction of parcel locations, research and collection of historical plats at the County Courthouse, and address location verification and editing based on 2002 ortho imagery. Additional work may include editing of existing datasets, as well as field work for the Department of Natural Resources. The intern candidate needs to have a sound working knowledge of GIS science and concepts, and must have experience with ArcGIS. Experience with AutoCAD is highly preferred.  The intern would work under the supervision of the County’s GIS Coordinator. The internship will begin after the selection of a qualified candidate. This is an excellent opportunity to gain real-world GIS experience working in an expanding and active department.

Wetlands Technician, Virginia Vernal Pools Program @ Sweet Briar College

Assist the VP director with research, management and educational efforts in the conservation of freshwater wetlands (primarily “vernal pools”) in the Central VA region and locations around the state.  Interns may assist in wetlands and amphibian field monitoring, habitat creation & enhancement, biotic inventory, client consulting, GIS & inventory data management, community-based conservation projects, web development & communication, educational outreach, etc. 
Current projects include these locations: Sweet Briar College campus, Piney River in Amherst County, various Central VA sites, Northern VA tier, Alleghany Highlands, Shenandoah Valley, etc.

Assist naturalist with care of nature center animals (feeding and cleaning), work in outreach for school kids, help design activities and projects for outdoor education programs.

Teach groups of school children any or all of the courses that the program has to offer in an outdoor setting. By taking part in the program, the intern develops a greater understanding of the necessity of experiential learning in helping to instill in students an appreciation of the natural environmental and the importance of its conservation. In addition to leading student groups, an intern may choose duties in these areas related to our environmental education program: • Program curriculum development • Habitat enhancement • Biotic inventory • Program promotion

Conservancy Intern, Central Virginia Land Conservancy
The newly formed Central Virginia Land Conservancy's priority needs is to gather data regarding land conservation issues for our region of service (Region 2000 and Nelson County). Most of the data is on a state scale, some can be regionalized, and, limited data has been created in our region. Data that the Land Conservancy is looking for includes: Lost farm land to sprawl and other causes Changes in forest land acreage. Land area changes in development. This can be presented as acreage lost to development and where.. Forest cover changes, acres. Land fragmentation.
